TCU – DUQUESNE POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 45, Duquesne 3
Sept. 4, 2021
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the game:
"First off, I just feel bad. The quarterback situation. The coach and I, earlier in the week on the phone, spoke about how during this game we want to make sure everyone stayed healthy. So, I feel really bad about that and for him [their quarterback]. Outside of that, we got to 1-0 and now we got Cal Berkeley, so here we go."
On the decision to shorten the second half's quarters to 12 minutes:
"They asked to go down to 12 minutes and I agreed. They had about five or six guys had gone out, so I think the heat had taken a toll on them. It was a good thing."
On the first half:
"I didn't like the first half penalty-wise. We had a kickoff return and a penalty. We had too many second and third longs, to be honest with you. Against good people, you're not going to be able to do that, so we need to do a better job of that. Defensively, we can't let them behind us, and we did a couple times."
TCU Senior Defensive Tackle Corey Bethley
On how the defense worked tonight
"We just find our rotation in practice. We try to figure out what guys do best and how we can utilize their talents on the D-Line. Everyone is special and they all have specific talents and skills."
On deciding to come back to TCU
"It definitely was. This place is great, I love TCU!"
On realizing only 7- yards were given up before half time
"No, we didn't. We just come out and play hard, no matter who it is."
On fans back at TCU
"It was amazing. COVID-19 was hard, and it messed with my fans. But my fan base is crazy. I love them, I love them."
TCU Junior Quarterback Max Duggan
On his first half:
"It was good for us to get started fast and stay on them, we didn't want to play sloppy, we wanted to get the thing started and play well. It was a good half, there's a couple of things we need to clean up but other than that, happy with it."
On having time to throw the ball:
"The offensive line, they wanted to make a statement at whatever people were saying in the offseason last year, they wanted to put all that stuff to rest, and they came out and did an awesome job, I had plenty of time to get our guys the ball. They were also moving guys around and giving our running backs plenty of lanes to run the ball."
On the quarterback room:
"It's awesome, were having a lot of fun on and off the field, it's a bunch of great guys and coach hill is doing a great job with us, it's a lot of fun."
On TD of JD Spielman:
"It makes my job pretty easy when I can just sit back and he does all of the hard work out there, he's a super talented kid, getting him back on the field for us is huge and makes all of our jobs easier when we get the ball in his hands."
TCU Senior Wide Receiver JD Spielman
On being back on the field:
"It felt really good to get back out there, you spend all of offseason trying to get back to where you were before an injury, it's just nice to see all of your hard work pay off on the field,"
On the wide receiver room:
"The chemistry in the wide receiver room is crazy, that's some of the closest guys I've ever been to, I consider them my brothers at this point. I just want everyone to win. It doesn't matter who's getting the passes, we're all excited for each other and we all cheer each other on. If we have questions, we are all there to answer each other's questions. We all have one common goal at the end of the day and it's to win so we all do what we can to make sure that happens."
On friendly competition with Derius Davis:
"We don't really have a contest; we have goals for each other and tell each other that one of us has to make a play and if one of us makes a big play then we have a good chance at winning. Special teams can really change the outcome of a game and if one of us can make a big play on special teams then we are happy for the other one to succeed.

Duquesne head coach Jerry Schmitt
On what was gained out of playing TCU:
"It's a great experience. It's a great place. We stretched ourselves obviously. Our kids got to see that challenge and what we try to do is to have both teams leave healthy. We've played some FBS in the past and we have some down the road here. It's a great experience."
On the injury to quarterback Joe Mischlerr:
"I don't have anything official, but it is a knee. I know it was in the first quarter. It was a rollout and I thought he got it clean. I couldn't see from my side what happened after he released the ball."
